overcoming a major setback

Mon Jul 14, 2008, 8:33 PM
On April 20th i experienced the most horrifying injury in my life. I lost part of my right index finger while working on my car. The tissue was ripped away from the bone all the way to the first knuckle leaving only a small flap of skin with part of the nail bed attached to it. Three days later I went in for reconstruction. The doctor says I was lucky because I would have lost it at the first joint if bone was crushed. He pulled a full thickness graph from my forearm and used it to fill in the tissue that had been lost. After spending three weeks with my arm in a cast came the weeks of therapy, along with the itch to be productive. Hell, in the first I couldn't even hold a pencil. Then it happened, the strength started to return to my fingers and I again able to draw for the first time in a long time. I finished up therapy a few weeks ago and still do strengthening exercises. The tip is regaining a little bit of feeling and I was finally able to sling some ink on last Wednesday. Ive done a few finished drawings and have started some more which Ill be posting soon. All in all, I'm eternally grateful I didn't lose the finger. I now refer to it as my ZOMBIE FINGER, and joke with my kids about how it will turn them into zombies if I tickle them with it.

Thanks man, Ive recovered 99 percent of my mobility and strength with that hand and have learned how to play guitar again (I used to play fingerstyle and am slowly getting to where I can do that again too) using a guitar pick (plectrum). Getting back to creating has helped me more than any therapy can.
Thanks again
Tim
